What Is Autonomous Knowledge? The Foundation of Agentic AI

Understand the missing data bridge between raw context and trustworthy AI execution.

Autonomous knowledge is enterprise data enriched with the context, lineage, business meaning, and governance AI agents need to act reliably and repeatedly at scale. The concept was introduced in Teradata’s 2026 “Arrested Automation” study to define the data foundation required to move from personal productivity tools to organizational AI execution.

Traditional knowledge management structures information for human reading and manual interpretation—internal documents and wikis a person searches and interprets. Autonomous knowledge formats context, definitions, lineage, and policy constraints into machine-readable data, allowing software agents to reason and execute tasks independently.

“Autonomous intelligence” is a general industry term for AI systems operating with minimal human oversight. In enterprise architecture, the precise term is agentic AI—systems designed to plan, reason, and execute workflows, using autonomous knowledge as their underlying data foundation.
