Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is being offered?
Teradata Aster Analytics 6.2, multi-genre advanced analytics at scale, is now available for cloud deployment on Microsoft Azure. All analytic functions available on Aster Analytics on-premises deployments are now available on Azure. Aster Analytics on Azure is offered on a virtual machine (VM) instances via listings in the Azure Marketplace. By incorporating Azure as a public cloud choice for deploying analytic sandboxes or production environments, Teradata makes it easier for companies of all sizes leverage innovative advanced analytics for better business decisions.

Customers can identify the number of worker nodes desired in the Aster Analytics Virtual Machine (VM) which will be instantiate 1 Queen node and 2 to 32 number of workers specified.

AppCenter is contained in a separate VM but available for customers licensed for Aster Analytics on Azure at no extra cost

2. What is included in the Aster Analytics on Azure subscription?
The subscription license entitles the customer to the following:

  • Aster database 6.20
  • Aster Analytics portfolio 7.0
  • Aster Client 6.22
  • Aster AppCenter 6.0
  • Teradata Premier Cloud support
  • Access to Getting Started Guide

3. Who are the intended customers?
Literally any organization of any size can use and benefit from Aster Analytics on Azure, which combines the power of Aster Analytics with the convenience of Microsoft Azure for a win-win value proposition. Existing customers with an Aster Analytics on-premises solution will find it just as agile, flexible, and capable as new-to-Aster Analytics customers. The ability to self-provision, launch quickly, pay-as-you-go, and rapidly analyze data in Azure are all key benefits.

4. What are the expected use cases?
The ideal use case for Aster Analytics in the cloud is an analytic sandbox use case, where businesses can quickly and easily stand up an Aster Analytic instance to test new data and ideas, prove new theories, integrated and analyze 3rd party data with existing data, or just to find interesting patterns and relationships in their data in the cloud.  It allows for quick experimentation at low risk.  Any of the current Aster Analytics business use cases can also be implemented in the cloud.  For example, path to purchase, fraud detection, influencer analysis, customer churn analysis, next best offer and many more.  Aster Analytics Solutions such as cyber threat, on-site search, and customer satisfaction index can also be deployed on Microsoft Azure.

5. What is Azure?
Microsoft Azure is a cloud computing platform and infrastructure created by Microsoft for building, deploying, and managing applications and services through a global network of Microsoft-managed datacenters.

6. What is the Azure Marketplace and its benefits?
The Azure Marketplace is an online applications and services marketplace that enables independent software vendors (ISVs) such as Teradata to offer their solutions to Azure customers around the world.

The Azure Marketplace combines Microsoft Azure partner ecosystems into a single, unified platform to better serve customers and partners, making it easier to search, purchase, and deploy a wide range of applications and services in just a few clicks.

7. How do I subscribe to and deploy a product from the Azure Marketplace?
You can find Azure Marketplace offers on or in the Microsoft Azure classic portal. Once logged into the management portal, you can quickly configure, deploy and manage the product similar to Azure cloud services.

8. Can I choose which Microsoft Azure region(s) my Marketplace purchase will be deployed in?
Customers have the option of deploying to any Azure datacenter region that Teradata enables. Customers can select data center locations closest to their services to optimize performance and manage budget.

9. Do Volume License discounts apply to Azure Marketplace purchases?
No. Standard Microsoft volume license discounts do not apply towards Azure Marketplace purchases. Please see the Microsoft Azure FAQ for more details.

10. How do I pay for these subscriptions? Will Azure Marketplace purchases appear on my Azure bill, or will there be another bill?
Azure Marketplace purchases will inherit the same payment method as your Azure subscription and will be billed separately from Azure usage. Please see the Microsoft Azure FAQ for more details.

11. What is the difference between "price," "software price," and "total price" in the cost structure for Virtual Machine offers in the Azure Marketplace?
"Price" refers to the cost of the Azure Virtual Machine to run the software. "Software price" refers to the cost of the publisher software running on an Azure Virtual Machine. "Total price" refers to the combined total cost of the Azure Virtual Machine and Teradata software running on an Azure Virtual Machine.

12. Can I apply Azure subscription credits or monetary commitment funds on my account towards Azure products and services to run Azure Marketplace offers?
Yes. Azure subscription credits or monetary commitment funds on your account can be used toward Azure products and services to run Azure Marketplace offers. For example, you can use Azure monetary commitment funds toward the "price" component of a Virtual Machine offer in the Azure Marketplace. However, neither Azure subscription credits nor monetary commitment funds can be applied towards Teradata software ("software price") running on an Azure Virtual Machine. 13. Whom do I contact for support issues with Azure Marketplace or Teradata software?
For general Azure Marketplace issues, please contact Azure Support. For support issues related to Teradata software purchased on the Marketplace, please contact Teradata directly via the Aster Analytics on Azure Support .

14. Where is Aster Analytics on Azure available?
Aster Analytics on Azure is available in all Azure Marketplace regions except for US Gov Iowa, US Gov Virginia, and China.

15. Is Aster Analytics on Azure secure?
Yes. Aster Analytics on Azure offers all of the same security options that exist for any Azure VM-hosted offering.

16. How do I get support?
Included with your paid Teradata Aster Analytics VM subscriptions on Azure Marketplace is Teradata’s Premier Cloud Support which provides 24x7 incident creation for problem resolutions, coverage and response times by customer-defined severity levels, and entitlement to software updates. Teradata Support is the service portal for Teradata products on Azure. 

Premier Cloud Support provides users access to Teradata Customer Service’s 24x7 Service Portal to engage in community forums for sharing ideas and discovering solutions, searching knowledge articles for relevant product & service information, downloading software updates, and accessing the Teradata Support Team for problem resolution. 

You must have a Teradata Support account to:

  • Request support from Teradata regarding an incident
  • Download software releases
  • Access educational materials

17. What Service Offerings are available?
The Teradata services team has created a broad set of Microsoft Azure-specific service offerings to assist customers in their migration to, and use of, Aster Analytics on Azure. The selection of advisory, training, architectural, implementation, and production services spanning is available here.

18. How does Aster Analytics on Azure compare to other Aster Analytics deployment options?
Teradata offers a range of Aster Analytics deployment options supporting a broad swath of customer requirements. In general our on-premises products, such as Teradata Aster Appliance, have the highest performance and concurrency metrics while our cloud products, such as Aster Analytics on Azure, have the greatest agility and flexibility while offering superior value. The hybrid combination of on-premises, managed cloud, and public cloud offerings – all using the same Aster Analytics software – is central to Teradata’s strategy of making it easy for customers to uncover high-impact business insights.

19. Is it single-node or multi-node (i.e., SMP or MPP)?
Aster Analytics on Azure is multi-node (MPP, massively parallel processing) and currently scalable up to 32 nodes. Higher levels of scalability will be available in the near future.

20. What partner software is available?
Numerous options exist to provision and deploy ISV partner software in combination with the Teradata Aster Analytics solutions on Microsoft Azure. Many of our partners offer their software on Azure, making it easy for both Teradata and ISV software to be deployed in the same Azure environment. Other options include on-premises partner software connected to Aster Analytics on Azure and cloud-to-cloud connectivity between partner cloud environments and Aster Analytics on Azure. When planning to deploy Teradata software in conjunction with partner software on Azure, customers should first find the Teradata ISV partner in the Teradata partner network directory and check compatibility with Aster Analytics 6.20.

21. How can I do a proof of concept (POC)?
The Teradata Services team is available to assist customers in determining the right architecture, configurations, and parameters to address the requirements of their specific use cases – and we encourage prospective users to reach out to their Teradata account team. For new-to-Teradata customers, there are a variety of options available to assist you in your evaluation and section process; please contact us for more information.

22. Can I transfer data back-and-forth between this and other systems?
Yes, customers are able to transfer data between virtually any data source to Aster Analytics with the Aster connectors and custom connectors. Customers should take note of any Azure-related data transfer fees associated with this activity.

23. What compliance levels are in place?
The same compliance levels that exist for all Azure-deployed software are in place for Aster Analytics on Azure. We refer you to Microsoft Azure for those specifics. Ultimately customers are responsible for ensuring that they meet whatever requirements are applicable for their industry, operating environment, and end-user expectations.

24. What service level can I expect?
Aster Analytics on Azure offers all of the same service levels that exist for any Azure VM-hosted offering. We refer you to Microsoft Azure for details.

25. Are there automated deployment options via Azure Resource Manager templates?
Yes. Teradata has harnessed Azure Resource Manager templates to help streamline the provisioning process for bringing up Aster Analytics and AppCenter virtual machines (VMs).

26.  What are the requirements to run Aster Analytics on Azure?
Aster Analytics on Azure requires Microsoft Azure DSv2-series VM and premium storage to run Aster Analytics. 

Aster has been certified on the following Azure VMs.  Performance will vary based on the Azure VM type. 

  • DS12_V2:  This VM is supported for experimental purposes and not intended for high performance computing.
  •  DS13_V2:  This VM is provided moderate level of performance.  This is recommended for entry level advanced analytics and analytic sandboxing.
  • DS14_V2:  This VM is provided high level of performance.  This VM can be used for sandboxing, analytic development and production analytics.
  • DS15_V2:  This VM is provided highest level of performance.  This VM is recommended for sandboxing, analytic development and production analytics.

Users will also be prompted to select the storage requirements of 1, 4 or 8 TB per worker.  For example, if you provision a 4 worker cluster @ 4 TB, you will have 16 TB of data storage.
AppCenter must be launched separately. Please refer to the “Teradata Aster AppCenter VM” for more information.

27.  How much is Aster Analytics on Azure?
Aster Analytics on Azure subscription is based on an hourly subscription. Businesses are charged for 1 queen and specified number of workers VMs. AppCenter software is included in the Aster Analytics subscription. Hourly subscription for each Queen and worker VMs varies based on Azure VM types. The following table provides Aster Analytics on Azure pricing. Note: This does not include the Azure VM pricing. Annual subscriptions will be available in the future.
