Performance

What is the performance and storage capacity?

Performance and storage values vary according to the selected IntelliCloud service and node/instance type; in all cases Fallback is enabled:

  • AWS public cloud infrastructure: m4.16xlarge with 20TB per instance, m4.10xlarge with 10TB per instance, or m4.4xlarge with 5TB per instance. Block level compression is enabled. Can scale instance sizes up or down and can scale in and out in 1-instance increments up to 64 instances for additional CPU and storage capacity.
  • Azure public cloud infrastructure: DS15_v2 with 5TB per instance or DS14_v2 with 5TB per instance. Block level compression is enabled. Can scale instance sizes up or down and can scale in and out in 1-instance increments up to 64 instances for additional CPU and storage capacity.
  • Teradata Cloud with IntelliFlex: Either IFX.Med with 75TB of SSD CDS (customer data space) or IFX.Sm with 45TB of SSD CDS. Dual 18-core CPUs and 512GB RAM per R630 node and can "unfold" for additional CPU power. Includes full redundant storage arrays and fallback with 40Gbps InfiniBand node interconnection.
  • Teradata Cloud with IntelliBase: 7.4TB of HDD CDS with dual 14-core CPUs and 256GB RAM per R730XD node. Includes 40Gbps InfiniBand node interconnection. Can expand in 1-node increments for additional CPU power and storage capacity.

Compression is enabled by default for all user tables on IntelliCloud systems. Actual compression rates will vary depending on data demographics—however rates of 3X or higher compression are common.

Which deployment choice should I select?

AWS public cloud infrastructure offers:

  • m4.16xlarge, m4.10xlarge, or m4.4xlarge AWS Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) infrastructure
  • EC2 and Elastic Block Store (EBS) resources provisioned and managed by Teradata Cloud Operations
  • Connectivity via internet access or dedicated connection

Azure public cloud infrastructure offers:

  • DS15_v2 or DS14_v2 Azure Virtual Machine infrastructure
  • VM and Premium network attached storage resources provisioned and managed by Teradata Cloud Operations

Teradata IntelliFlex offers:

  • Dedicated, purpose-built hardware provisioned and managed by Teradata Cloud Operations
  • Comparable to IntelliFlex on-premises but located in a Teradata data center
  • Independent scaling of compute and storage; high availability with hot standby node capability

What database releases are supported?

IntelliCloud service currently supports Teradata Database 15.10 (all) or Teradata Database 16.10 (Azure).

What is the minimum number of nodes in a system?

The minimum number of nodes that can be specified in a single IntelliCloud system is two.

I need more nodes. How do I scale my system?

Easy. IntelliCloud systems are elastic in that they can be scaled up and down (adjusting capacity of compute instances) and/or scaled in and out (adjusting number of compute instances) depending on resource availability. The IntelliCloud Management Console is the web-based interface through which you monitor and adjust resource allocation for your system.

Does it come with Columnar?

Yes, Teradata Columnar is included with IntelliCloud. Teradata Columnar is a hybrid row and column database that fully integrates columnar and row-based tables, establishing new levels of flexibility, performance, and compression and strengthening your data warehouse and analytics capabilities.

Benefits include:

  • Improves data warehouse performance by only reading the data absolutely required for each query
  • Allows you to respond to more queries faster while storing more data
  • Integrated solution can mix and match the storage formats in hybrid row and column storage, thereby delivering the highest performance
  • Simple to use; minimal DBA effort required, and no changes necessary to existing applications or queries

Security

Data security is extremely important. How does IntelliCloud tackle security?

Security is the number one priority for Teradata IntelliCloud services, and that’s why we deliver across-the-board support for every facet of cloud security including physical security, network security, data protection, monitoring, and access controls.

The Teradata IntelliCloud service architecture was designed to comply with strict international standards:

  • Cloud Security Alliance (CSA)
  • General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
  • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) 
  • International Standards Organization (ISO) 27001
  • Payment Card Industry (PCI)
  • Service Organization Control (SOC) 1 and 2

The IntelliCloud Information Security Management System gets annual third-party verification to ensure compliance with standards. These audit reports and the latest certifications are available upon request.

Teradata IntelliCloud supports secure connections for data transmission. Your cloud systems are only accessible via IPsec VPN tunnels between your premises/data center and IntelliCloud, providing an additional layer of security. All traffic is encrypted. To keep “data at rest” secure, Teradata utilizes self-encrypting drives.

Has Teradata undergone any compliance audits to verify security?

Yes. Teradata has invested in rigorous third party audits of its IntelliCloud as-a-service offerings in order to demonstrate compliance with industry security regulations and industry best practices such as ISO 27001, SOC 1, SOC 2, PCI, and HIPAA.

What authentication methods are available?

Teradata IntelliCloud systems are LDAP ready. By default, systems will use a native database authentication method.

In Teradata Database, users DBC (superuser), SYSDBA (database management), and SECADM (security administration) are provided with TD2 authentication and default passwords. It is important to change passwords for these users as soon as you can access the system. User SYSBACK is created on all Teradata systems and its password is secured by Cloud Operations. The SYSBACK user’s password should not be changed because it is used to execute daily backup operations on the system.

Does Teradata Cloud Operations have access to my data?

No. The Teradata Cloud Operations team does not have visibility or access to your data.

Will my data ever be transferred to or backed up in another country?

No. Your data is never transferred across country borders.

Availability

Do IntelliCloud services come with an availability service level guarantee?

Yes. Teradata will use commercially reasonable efforts to make the Teradata IntelliCloud service generally available 7 x 24 x 365. Teradata will target a Service Level Agreement (SLA) for IntelliCloud (excluding planned downtime) of up to 99.9% measured on a monthly basis.

What availability techniques are utilized for IntelliCloud?

All nodes for IntelliCloud on IntelliFlex or IntelliBase are configured using RAID 1 protection, which provides redundancy at the hardware/disk-drive level. If a single drive fails, Teradata Database will continue to function without interruption. The failed drive will be replaced by Teradata Cloud Operations as soon as possible and the drive will rebuild automatically.

In the unlikely event that both copies of a RAID 1 pair fail, the Teradata Database has been configured to use Fallback protection on all tables. Fallback provides a layer of protection that extends beyond just a loss of redundant hardware. With Fallback, a secondary copy of your data exists on a different node (for Teradata systems with two or more nodes). The database will go through a restart and continue to function with a reduction in performance. Once the failed drives are replaced, the Teradata Database will rebuild the new drives using the Fallback data copies.

Will I have access to my Teradata system during scaling?

Some scaling operations may be accomplished with just a database restart, which is a brief period. For other during scaling operations, Teradata systems are available for read-only operations; you cannot load or change data but can continue to run queries and reports. When the new resources are ready, there will be a few minutes of scheduled downtime to transition from the former to new resources.

How often are my data backed up in IntelliCloud?

Your IntelliCloud systems are backed up daily by default. The two most recent backup copies are replicated to a secondary storage environment.

Are backups automatically configured?

The “sysback” user in Teradata Database is used to perform backups. If you want to change passwords for the “sysback” account, you must coordinate with Teradata Cloud Operations via a change management ticket in the IntelliCloud Management Console to ensure uninterrupted backups.

What if I need my data restored? How is this process accomplished?

Simply place a request for restore (either at table, database, or full system level) via the IntelliCloud Management Console. 

Can my backups be encrypted?

Yes. Teradata provides you the option to purchase encrypted backups within the Teradata IntelliCloud service on Teradata IntelliFlex or Teradata IntelliBase. This level of encryption was designed to protect sensitive backup data against unauthorized access and will utilize industry-standard encryption algorithms and the RSA BSAFE FIPS 140-2 validated cryptographic libraries as well as supporting both standard CBC and the stronger Cipher mode GC for additional security. Please note that the encrypted backup feature has some impact on the normal backup and restoration timeframes.

When you choose this enhanced service, the backup copy at the primary Teradata data center and the replicated backup at the secondary Teradata data center will both be encrypted.

Operations

Who are Teradata Cloud Operations and what do they do?

The Teradata Cloud Operations team performs activities such as:

  • Onboarding assistance
  • Provisioning assistance
  • System monitoring
  • System maintenance
  • Patch management
  • Software upgrades

Our Teradata Cloud Operations team continually monitors and administers the IntelliCloud environment to help ensure security, availability, backups, and data recovery.

Does Teradata Cloud Operations have visibility into my data?

No. The Teradata Cloud Operations team does not have visibility or access to your data.

Does the Teradata Cloud Operations team provide DBA (database administrator) services?

No. DBA services are typically the responsibility of you, the customer. Please note, however, that you are welcome to engage Teradata Services to perform DBA and other value-add services.

How do I monitor the performance of my IntelliCloud system?

The IntelliCloud Management Console is the web-based interface through which you monitor and adjust resource allocation for your system at the account level. Teradata Viewpoint is your primary operational view for monitoring and managing your cloud systems. This instance of Viewpoint can only monitor your IntelliCloud-based systems.

The Teradata IntelliCloud Management Console enables you to:

  • View status of all your IntelliCloud databases in one location
  • Monitor and manage your IntelliCloud resources
  • See basic database site metrics
  • Open and monitor support tickets
  • Add or delete user accounts

What does Teradata Cloud Operations monitor for me?

Teradata Cloud Operations monitors platform availability, backups, security, and availability of the Teradata IntelliCloud environment.  

What systems are provided during provisioning?

IntelliCloud customers get three (3) servers along with the Teradata-provisioned infrastructure:

  • A load server running Teradata load utilities 
  • Preconfigured Viewpoint server for management of database resources including predefined views:
    • Dashboard with a high-level view of IntelliCloud systems
    • Current activity for monitoring active sessions
    • Capacity view for managing space and resource utilization trends over time
  • Utility server (via remote desktop access) which is preconfigured with Teradata client tools for data access, database management, and load/unload functions.

Who performs hardware/software maintenance on my IntelliCloud systems?

Complete hardware and software support is provided by the Teradata Cloud Operations team, which will inform you when updates to Teradata software or operating systems are recommended. Teradata Cloud Operations will coordinate incidents and change control with you (for implementation of software updates) as required. Note: testing of software updates is your responsibility.

During software maintenance, will my IntelliCloud system be available?

The Teradata system(s) will not be available when software maintenance is performed on systems during a planned maintenance window. 

Does Teradata Cloud Operations have access to my backups?

No. The Teradata Cloud Operations team does not have visibility or access to your data.

Will my data ever be transferred to or backed up in another country?

No. Your data is never transferred across country borders.

Connectivity and Data Loading

What are connectivity options for my cloud system(s)?

You can choose from several methods for connecting to IntelliCloud. An internet connection is standard when using AWS or Azure infrastructure, while a site-to-site VPN from your data center to ours is standard when using IntelliFlex or IntelliBase in a Teradata data center, while. The site-to-site VPN uses a 100Mbps IPsec connection to keep data transmissions secure and provides bandwidth up to 100Mbps.

If greater bandwidth or a dedicated network port is required when connecting to AWS or Azure, you may be able to use AWS Direct Connect or Azure ExpressRoute, respectively. If greater bandwidth or a dedicated network port is required when connecting to IntelliFlex or IntelliBase, Teradata offers 1Gbps or 10Gbps direct connections for an additional fee. With these options, you procure the WAN bandwidth via your preferred telecommunications provider. 

Is 100Mbps over VPN enough for my data movement needs?

Whether your workload will need more bandwidth than 100Mbps depends on how much data you plan on moving back and forth between your data center and IntelliCloud. Follow this link for a simple calculator to help you better understand your data transfer bandwidth needs.

Please also note that while site-to-site VPN connections over the Internet are secure, actual bandwidth will vary. If you need guaranteed bandwidth you will need to use a dedicated private circuit as described above.

What is needed to set up a site-to-site VPN?

A Teradata IntelliCloud site-to-site VPN form must be submitted to Teradata Cloud Operations before a VPN tunnel can be established. This form will be given to you by our team upon order placement. A two global public IPs are required for routing return traffic on the site-to-site VPN.

Can I set up a VPN connection between my on-premises corporate network and my IntelliCloud on AWS/Azure system?

Yes. Included in the IntelliCloud for AWS/Azure price is a 100Mbps site-to-site Virtual Private Network (VPN) configuration via publicly-routable IP addresses. This method can be used to connect your IntelliCloud system and your corporate network using a VPN in which your on-premises firewall/router is used to terminate the IPsec site-to-site tunnel connection, which encrypts all data.

Along with the 100Mbps site-to-site VPN, also included in the price is 1% (of system size) for data transfer out of the AWS region / VPC or Azure region / VNet. Additional transfers incur additional costs (a pass-through of the AWS / Azure egress charges).

Is VNet Peering available with IntelliCloud for Azure to connect/peer my applications running in one VNet with the IntelliCloud system running in a different VNet?

No. There is an Azure limitation on peering two VNets in subscriptions associated with different Active Directory tenants. In short, the limitation is that two VNets cannot be peered unless both VNets are in subscriptions associated to the same Active Directory tenant. Because your applications will be running in your own Azure Subscriptions which will be associated with your own Active Directory tenants -- and Teradata Database will be running in Teradata's Azure Subscription which will be associated with Teradata's Active Directory tenant -- the two cannot be peered.

In such scenarios, Azure recommends a VPN Gateway (VNet-to-VNet Connections) to peer two VNets. Please see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-network/virtual-network-peering-overview.

What’s the best way to access my IntelliCloud environment?

Upon provisioning a Teradata IntelliCloud system, instructions will be provided on how to access your environment. You will get a list of IP addresses to your database systems, load server, Viewpoint server, and utilities server along with instructions on how to access each one. The load, Viewpoint, and utility servers will be preconfigured to access your database system(s) from within IntelliCloud.

External IP addresses will be provided to access database systems directly from servers or desktops within your own network, and you can download Teradata Tools & Utilities.

Database access to Teradata is available through any of the following drivers and utilities:

  • ODBC, JDBC, OLE DB Drivers
  • Net Data Provider
  • Teradata CLIv2
  • Teradata Plug-in for Eclipse
  • BTEQ – command line query tool
  • Teradata Studio – Eclipse-based database query tool

Will I be provided a load server for loading my data?

Yes, a load server will be provisioned with your IntelliCloud environment.

I need to load large and concurrent data volumes. What’s the difference between the load server included in the base price and an enhanced load server?

If you expect to have large load volumes on a regular basis, Teradata Cloud Operations can optionally provision an “Enhanced Load Server” which is configured with 1TB of storage space. Teradata tools and utilities version 15.10 are included with both load servers.

Will I be able to load custom scripts on the Load Server?

Yes.

How do I load data into IntelliCloud?

Teradata IntelliCloud load servers support SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) to move data files into the cloud. All necessary load/unload utilities are provided on the load server. Data loads are accomplished in the following ways:

  • Teradata Parallel Transporter – (recommended)
    • Load Operator to insert data into empty tables (fastest)
    • Update Operator to insert/update data into populated tables
    • Stream Operator to insert data into tables concurrently (enhanced option)
    • Inserter Operator to insert BLOB data
  • Legacy stand-alone tools – (for support of legacy scripts)
    • FastLoad
    • FastExport
    • MultiLoad
    • TPump (enhanced option)

What is the best way to load large files to IntelliCloud?

Portable storage devices can be used to transfer large amounts of data into Teradata IntelliCloud. Please review the Cloud Import/Export document available on our cloud service desk for further details. Teradata Parallel Transporter can load data files in delimited or fixed width formats.

Customers with an existing Teradata system can use ARC (ARCMAIN utility) to create a copy of data to load into the external device by using an ARCHIVE command for each source database. The external device is then encrypted and sent to the Teradata Data Center where it is mounted. You can then load the data from the drive to the Teradata environment. Requests for receiving and mounting the drive can be made through the Cloud Support Portal.

Another option is “Teradata Direct Connect” for initiating a connection from your data center to Teradata IntelliCloud. Optional 1Gbps or 10Gbps connection ports are available for data transfer.

Hadoop

What is IntelliCloud with Hadoop?

IntelliCloud with Hadoop is available to augment your IntelliCloud for Teradata Cloud system with a co-located, fully-managed Hadoop environment. This offer lets you expand your analytic ecosystem and focus on business value and service utilization rather than managing software and infrastructure. Customers can use the service for

  • Big Data processing
  • Scientific analytics
  • Business and sales planning
  • IoT and sensor data processing
  • Aggregation of social media data

What versions are available?

IntelliCloud with Hadoop is available with Cloudera CDH 5.9 and Hortonworks HDP 2.5.3. 

What infrastructure is used?

IntelliCloud with Hadoop uses Teradata Cloud with IntelliBase: 8TB of CDS per Data Node with a minimum of 3 Master Nodes, 2 Edge Nodes, and 3 Data Nodes with dual 14-core CPUs and 256GB RAM per R730XD node.

What are the prices for IntelliCloud with Hadoop?

Cloudera CDH: When purchasing 18 nodes or less for a one-year commitment, pricing is $4,340 monthly ($5.83/hour). For 18+ nodes on a three-year commitment, pricing is $3,100 monthly ($4.17/hour). For more than 18 nodes for a one-year commitment, pricing is $2,940 monthly ($5.83/hour). For more than 18 nodes on a three-year commitment, pricing is $2,200 monthly ($2.96/hour).

Hortonworks HDP: When purchasing 18 nodes or less for a one-year commitment, pricing is $3,690 monthly ($4.96/hour). For 18+ nodes on a three-year commitment, pricing is $2,640 monthly ($3.55/hour). For more than 18 nodes for a one-year commitment, pricing is $2,520 monthly ($3.39/hour). When purchasing more than 18 nodes for a one-year commitment, pricing is $2,520 monthly ($3.39/hour). For more than 18 nodes on a three-year commitment, pricing is $1,800 monthly or ($2.42/hour).

  • Hourly prices are effective rates for comparison purposes only, based on a 31-day month; services are not sold on hourly basis.
  • Minimum subscription is for 8 nodes: 3 Master, 2 Edge, and 3 Data; pricing for 1 node is shown above.

What additional applications are available?

To get even more value from your Teradata IntelliCloud subscription, consider adding any of the following ecosystem software applications to your subscription:

  • Teradata ecosystem applications – AppCenter and QueryGrid (licensed separately)
    • Teradata AppCenter enables the easy creation and reuse of analytics while Teradata QueryGrid delivers data access, processing, and movement across systems in heterogeneous analytical environments.
  • Customer-provided applications – BI/DI applications hosted in the IntelliCloud environment
    • Customer-provided Business Intelligence (BI) or Data Integration (DI) applications can be co-located with their databases and data lakes in the cloud, enabling a best fit architecture to run workloads where they perform well.
  • Partner tools – from Fuzzy Logix and Protegrity (licensed separately)
    • Fuzzy Logix in-database analytic solutions help companies make smarter decisions and improve effectiveness and performance, while Protegrity Data Security Platform for Teradata helps you secure your sensitive cloud data and ensure compliance with all PCI, PHI, and Privacy regulations.

Can I host my own applications in the same cloud environment as my analytic database or data lake?

Yes. IntelliCloud Application Ecosystem enables you to create a best fit architecture to run Business Intelligence (BI) and Data Integration (DI) workloads where they perform best while maintaining security and performance between the applications and the database platforms. You can choose between 8 different instance types most appropriate for your BI/DI application resource needs and easily change your ecosystem application instance type later as application needs change.

IntelliCloud Application Ecosystem employs a shared responsibility model. Teradata is responsible for providing infrastructure management, backup and restore through snapshots, and network connectivity; you are responsible for managing and maintaining the BI/DI application environment while ensuring operating system (OS) and BI/DI application license compliance.

What BI/DI applications can be installed and how do I access them?

You can install any BI/DI application needing to connect with your Teradata Database and Hadoop platforms that is supported on VMware vSphere. While technically any applications can be installed, we do not promote this service as an Infrastructure as a Service replacement for non-BI/DI applications. You are responsible for ensuring compliance with the Teradata IntelliCloud Customer Agreement Use Guidelines.

Once an IntelliCloud (Application Ecosystem) instance is provisioned, you will be provided with Secured Shell (SSH) and Remote Desktop (RDP) Guest OS administrative login credentials to access your provisioned instance. You can also engage Teradata Services for an end-to-end managed solution, including application administration, monitoring and operations, and application maintenance.

What instance types and operating systems are available for hosting my BI/DI applications?

The following 8 virtual machine instance types are available for hosting your BI/DI applications; storage comes in 100GB increments:

  • 2XSmall: 2GB RAM & 1 vCPU

IntelliCloud Management Console and the Teradata Cloud Service Portal are also available 7 x 24 x 365 for the submission of incidents, changes, and requests for information.

Business Day: Monday-Friday 9:00 AM EST-8:00 PM EST.  

Next Business Day: Example: If a P2 or P3 incident is opened in the Teradata Cloud Service Portal after 8:00 PM EST on Friday, Teradata Staff will respond to this incident on Monday at 9:00 AM EST. 

How do I request support on my IntelliCloud systems?

Up to five (5) customer users will be provided with access to the IntelliCloud Management Console and Teradata Cloud Service Portal for submitting requests for information and tracking incidents and changes.
