Teradata Analytical Ecosystem provides long-term solution to growing demands on data management

One of the leading international retailers, METRO GROUP, has upgraded its database-driven analytic environment with new capabilities from Teradata (NYSE: TDC), the analytic data solutions company. Europe’s third largest retailer is implementing the Teradata® Analytical Ecosystem, a comprehensive portfolio of hardware, software, and services that enables different Teradata systems to seamlessly work together to deliver analytics and greater insight. The newest enabler of the portfolio, Teradata® Unity™, synchronizes and unifies a company’s Teradata Analytical Ecosystem.

By extending and modernizing its analytical infrastructure, METRO GROUP is continuing to build out its enterprise information system strategy across the business. In recent years METRO GROUP has implemented many important new applications to accommodate a growing community of enterprise data warehouse (EDW) users across more than 30 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. Additionally, Teradata's advanced customer relationship management solution has been introduced in more than 20 countries. Growing data volumes and more complex demands by users have required a more expansive, integrated system.
Analytical Ecosystem provides high flexibility
METRO GROUP compared several vendor approaches during a critical proof of concept trial period, which was decisively won by Teradata with its Teradata Analytical Ecosystem. The new environment brings together different platforms from the Teradata platform family in one complete solution. According to individual requirements, data sets can be stored and analyzed in the best qualified platform. This secures high availability of the data for all users in the organization and optimized workload management ensures that results of analyses are at hand within the shortest period of time.

Analyses and crucial information for all business segments
The retailer’s sales brands make intensive use of the enterprise data warehouse in more than 30 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa in order to gain valuable business insights in sales management, category management, store operations, supply chain intelligence and customer relationship management. Using Teradata's Relationship Manager, METRO GROUP also manages and analyzes marketing activities across different venues and markets, enabling the company, for instance, to immediately recognize how successful a campaign has been or how attractive particular product segments are for specifically targeted customer groups. With its repositories of detailed data assets continuously growing, the data mining tools within the system can make ever-more precise analytic predictions on a broader scale.

The ecosystem for METRO GROUP includes a large Active Enterprise Data Warehouse and a Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance along with Teradata's Relationship Manager application portfolio – as well as the Teradata Extreme Data Appliance, which is used for compliance applications. By interconnecting these systems, requests can be coordinated across different platforms and datasets can be moved seamlessly according to fresh requirements. The ecosystem provides the base for future enhancements as demands on the analytical infrastructure continue to increase. Further Teradata platforms can be added any time due to the high scalability of the Teradata technology. This level of scalability, flexibility and system agility ensure that the Teradata technology is a future-proof investment for METRO GROUP.
