hmmmm! another glitch in the adventure neil. I tried to create a sample portlet as discussed in the manual..however, the portel shows me a page which says the application server is running but does not prompt me to enter admin password or any other options.The only thing I see is a page full of details from Sun notifying me that app server is running...

Here is what I see

Your Application Server is now running

To replace this page, overwrite the file index.html in the document root folder of this domain's default virtual server. The document root folder of the domain domain1 is located at install-dir /domains/domain1/docroot, where install-dir is the Application Server installation directory.

any ideas on how to proceed further with this

Hmmmn, that's very strange indeed.... that doesn't look like a standard Tomcat error message? Are you trying to deploy Viewpoint into some other servlet container / app server? (Note that Viewpoint only runs on the Tomcat server included with the PDK download).

I'm having a similar problem with the startup.bat file. When I try to run it I get this message on my cmd window.

C:\tdpdk-13.00.00.01\viewpoint-portal\bin>startup.bat
Using CATALINA_BASE: C:\tdpdk-13.00.00.01\viewpoint-portal\
Using CATALINA_HOME: C:\tdpdk-13.00.00.01\viewpoint-portal\
Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: C:\tdpdk-13.00.00.01\viewpoint-portal\\temp
Using JRE_HOME: C:\Java\jre1.5.0_19\
Using JAVA_OPTS -Ddb=postgresql -Xms256m -Xmx256m -XX:MaxPermSize=128M -D
file.encoding=UTF8 -Djava.security.auth.login.config=C:\tdpdk-13.00.00.01\viewpo
int-portal\\conf\jaas.config -Djava.util.logging.manager=org.apache.juli.ClassLo
aderLogManager -Djava.util.logging.config.file="C:\tdpdk-13.00.00.01\viewpoint-p
ortal\\conf\logging.properties"

I also checked the version of JAVA im running and it says 1.4.2_04 even though I uninstalled the previous versions and I have 1.5.0_19 on my computer. How do I update JAVA correctly and get startup.bat file to work?

That is a normal startup message. Check the contents of PDK_FOLDER/viewpoint-portal/logs/catalina.out where log messages will be output after startup, to see if there are any errors.
