We have this big VMWare server that we plan to install Teradata V2R6.2 on the 32bit Windows Server 2003 SP2.But we are having problem with the installations, and there is no mentioning of VMWare support on Teradata OS support matrix nor in Teradata V2R6.2 for 32 bits Windows 2003 Installation Guide.1) Is VMWare supported?2) If (1) is affirmative, then is there a place where we can get the installation instruction for VMWare? HiI have installed Teradata demo on Windows 2000 machine and I have been working comfortable with the same using SQL Assistant and Administrator (7.1).Recently I installed the same demo version on Windows 2003 and I have been trying to connect to it using SQL Assistant and it gives me the error (160: Specified driver could not be loaded due to system error 124 (Teradata). When I try and connect using Administrator I get the error "10054: 10054 WSA E ConnReset: Connection reset by peer" and the service stops.I do not have any firewalls and my hosts file is untouched (the same as with 2000). I have tried installing the latest ODBC drivers but the result is unchanged.Any help is resolving this issue would be highly appreciated.

We will generate some reports from TeraData, due to the business logic is too complex, we may need to create function in TeraData, and use them as below:
select function(V_DIM_ACCOUNT.Acct_Num) from V_Dim_Account;
As I can see now, TeraData seems don't support using SQL to write function but procedure, but procedure can't fit our requirement because I can't use it in a simple select sql. Is there anyone have writen any functions in Teradata before, can you send some samples to me about this?

We are beginning to work with DataStage and wish to switch a lot of processing from executing on the Mainframe to DataStage. We employ a lot of parameterized Macros in our ETL environment, and some are very complex with many SQL statements and layers of Macros imbedded in them.

Our expectation was that we should be able to execute macros exactly as they were developed and run in production, on the mainframe. We are experiencing abends with Macros containing more than one SQL statement. It appears the Ascential Teradata Enterprize stage is able to execute something simple like a stored procedure but is not robust. It appears to us the solutions are to leave Macro execution on the mainframe or rewrite all the macro processes for Ascential.

What are the experiences of other Teradata shops? Is there some secret to getting Macros to work?

Hello,I am trying to "exec" a macro from MS Access as a pass-through query. However, if the macro has insert/update/delete then a select, no data will be returned with an error of "Pass-through query with ReturnsRecords property set to True did not return any records. (Error 3325)". Only when the macro is the select will data be returned. It appears as though the macro is "being expanded" by MS Access as multiple lines - which it won't process, only a single line. BTW, it will work with other DBMS stprocs. Could this be a driver problem? or the correct behavior?Thanks

Teradata query not finishing when executed from DataStage

Hello all,I have a developer running a process using Datastage 8A query is executed on Teradata but does'nt finish.From Pmon the session is idle and pe state is response. It stayed in this state all weekend.If I run the query outside of DS it executes in less than a minute and returns 21 mil rows.Any Ideas?thanks, Tbob

Hi there,I am pretty new to teradata. Recently I wrote some teradata SQL statements and be able to pull some data to view using SQL assistant for teradata. I then create/save a macro with some parameters and can be able to execute it within teradata SQL assistant, ODBC. Now I need to execute this macro from an MS-access form/interface. Usually, I use ado and dao between vba and SQL server. I've read someone could be able to do this with teradata. Can someone help me with this? Can I use ODBC for this task or I need OLEBD and connection string? Anyone has any code I can learn the syntax from?Thanks in advance.

Need to Cancel a Query runnnign between ASP and Teradata

There were some parameters on the clients server that needed setting, problem resolved.

Teradata with Java CAPS

Has anyone used Teradata with Java CAPS? Specifically we're trying to use the Java CAPS OTD (Object Type Definition) to define a Teradata macro to Java CAPS. The Java CAPS OTD interface allows you to specify:

1) A table or view
2) A stored procedure
3) SQL

We select option 3, because option 2 only retrieves stored procedures. However, when we put in the "Exec macroname(?,?,?);", Java CAPS does not allow it, saying that it's an invalid SQL statement. I assume it's doing some form of validation. A regular "SELECT ..." statement works fine.

We would like to have our database retrieval code in macros, rather than having the code stored in Java CAPS, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do this. We can use stored procedures for updates, but we can't use them to retrieve resultsets.

Does anyone know a workaround to this?

Teradata connectivity Problem with Informatica

Hi,
I have Informatica 8.1 and have to use Teradata as Backend. I created ODBC connection and I am able to import teradata tables as source and target. I created a relational connection for Teradata and tried to execute my workflow but I am getting error. In teradata relational connection I have given connection name as edw_dev , user_id and Password and data source name again as edw_dev as that is my system dsn name in ODBC connection. The database name is kept as blank.

The error which I am getting is

I would be very grateful if some-one could suggest a package that can do this.

Teradata - DTS Parameter Passing

I am new to Teradata.

I am trying to pull Teradata data into SQL Server 2000 using a DTS. I need to pull a month data based on the month parameter passed. DTS throws an error when I try to use '?' in the query. What is the right way to use a parameterised query in DTS?

Ex: I need to pass inv_month as parameter from DTS Global Variable.

select * from invoices where inv_year=2007 and inv_month = 5

Loading data to base tables directly using Informatica

Hi,
We are using Informatica to load data to Teradata. We use Loader
object and load data using Fastload and Multiload. In all our
loads we extract the data from MSSQL databases and load the data
to a staging area in Teradata environment. once the data is
loaded in the staging area we then use Teradata BTEQ scripts
(out side informatica) to load the data into the actual
production base tables. There are quite a few cases where we can
load data into production Base tables directly from MSSQL using
Informatica loader object (FASTLOAD, MULTILOAD)but we are afraid
if that would cause any issues (Locking the tables, and the only
way to get the table is to drop the table and recreate it). I'd
appreciate if some one is following this approach, and if they
ran into any issues.

Following is the background of the problem and my questions:

Problem Background:

I have a SELECT query that takes 16sec to return the answer set using Queryman or BTEQ. The optimizer chooses a plan that has 5 or 6 steps.

When I run the same SELECT query through Ascential Data Stage tool, the optimizer chooses a plan that has 9 steps, which is different from the one when EXPLAINed using Queryman. The query takes forever to return the answer set.

I collected stats on the join columns and the query run using Queryman took 10min to return the answer set.

Questions:

1. Did anybody experiened similar problem when using Teradata with ETL tools like Ascential Data Stage, Informatica?

2. Is there a way to make the query to perform at its best(16sec elapse time to return answer set) in Data Stage tool?

Passing NULL values to a TERADATA sp, using Teradata .NET provider

Teradata provides Teradata .NET provider driver for connecting to Teradata using .NET 2.0,
I was initally using ODBC driver, but for calling SP using CommandType.Text or CommandType.StoredProcedure, both do not return any value, so we switched to Teradata provider provided by NCR corporation . ( Can ODBC driver be used for retrieving the SP return value ??? )

But I was a facing a problem related to passing NULL values to the SP.
The documentation provide to use DBNull.Value, but this works perfectly well for DATE and TIME type parameters but not for STRING type parameters, where the system gives the exception NULLReferenceException.
This SP works pefectly well with NULL values by using NULL values in Teradata SQL Assistant.

I have even tried using parameter values as NULL,'NULL',"NULL" but all fail for one or the other parameter types, sometimeg giving Invalid DATE and time and for string types.. not accepting it as a NULL but instead as a blank space.

If I need to be more elaborate, please do tell me..
I can paste my code as well..

Help needed is urgent.

Issue using Informatica to load Teradata tables.

I have an issue while loading data from sql server to Teradata database. It takes a very long time to load 100K rows. when i checked the log I guess it is doing a row level insert instead of a bulk load. Here is a part of the session log

strange thing-interactional of two different database connection

I found a strange phenomenon happened in NCR-CLI.

I want to use two different database connection in one process.
according to the CLISAMP.c, I think that DBCAREA will keep all connection info.
so I defined two DBACAREA, one is dbc_a, dbc_b. corspondingly, I copy the codes(initial, connect, disconnect, etc)
to make sure that two connection is irrelative.

the test code is very simple. following is pseudocode:

DBCAREA dbc_a
DBCAREA dbc_b

dbc_a.connect
dbc_b.connect

dbc_a.disconnect
dbc_b.disconnect --------there is a error when running here. "disconnect failed -- CLI : 304 Message Not Found!"

If so, I can not use multi database connection to imporve the performance.

Hope some one can tell the reason and how to deal with it.
