I have no knowledge of Unicode best practices or, for that matter, what are the considerations involved in using UNICODE in Teradata. Can anyone send me in the right direction? (orange paper, personal experience, technical considerations - compression, collations, etc.)

The best place to start are the following orange books:

Teradata Orange Book - Getting Started: International Character Sets and the Teradata Database (541-0004068 D02 / June 2007)
Teradata Orange Book - Unicode Data Dictionary User's Guide (541 – 0006684 A02 / August, 2007)

More insight into the server side can be found in:

Teradata Database International Character Set Support 12.0 (B035-1125-067K / September 2007)
