Cost-Based Optimization: Obtaining the Best Execution Plan for Complex Queries*
Sunday, September 18, 2005
8:00am – 12:30pm

Optimizer choices in determining the execution plan for complex queries are a dominant factor in the performance delivery for a data warehouse environment. The goal of this workshop is to de-mystify the inner workings of cost-based optimization for complex query workloads. We will discuss the differences between rule-based optimization and cost-based optimization with a focus on how a cost-based optimization enumerates and selects among possible execution plans for a complex query. The influences of parallelism and hardware configuration on plan selection will be discussed along with the importance of data demographics. Advanced statistics collection will be discussed as the foundational input for decision-making within the cost-based optimizer. Performance characteristics and optimizer selection among different join and indexing opportunities will also be discussed with examples. The inner workings of the query rewrite engine will be described along with the performance implications of various rewrite strategies.

Teradata "101": Building An Enterprise Data Warehouse With Teradata*
    Sunday, September 18, 2005
    8:00am – 12:30pm

This workshop is intended to provide participants with an understanding of the value of data warehousing, the impact it can have on an organization, what "differentiates" Teradata as the best infrastructure and why Teradata is best suited to be the "intelligence engine" for the enterprise. The workshop is organized in three interlocking sessions:

Learn how leading companies around the world are strategizing, acting upon, and deploying integrated decision support systems to reduce costs, grow their revenues, and gain new knowledge of customer needs.

    1. Enterprise Data Warehousing
The first part of the workshop is a vendor-neutral opportunity to learn about the value of enterprise data warehousing, the impact it can have on an organization, and how to successfully build an enterprise data warehouse. An enterprise data warehouse is much more than the sum of its parts. The process of building it includes many other important aspects like aligning the needs and demands of business people and IT people within the organization, or identifying previously unknown or unseen business threats or opportunities. The workshop will provide a list of practical "guiding principles for data warehousing" and a list of "pitfalls" to avoid.

    2. Teradata "101"
The second part of the workshop provides details on the unique differentiators that quality Teradata as the "best in class" technology infrastructure for enterprise data warehousing.

    3. Enterprise "Fit"
The third and final part of the workshop provides an overview of active data warehousing and how Teradata works within a Services-Oriented Architecture, called Teradata’s Real-Time Enterprise Reference Architecture, to enable an organization to leverage Teradata as the “analytical engine” to support all decision-making throughout the enterprise.

You cannot have an effective knowledge management environment without a robust data warehousing architecture. Come learn how to build a data warehouse with Teradata.
