Availability Management Services

Teradata Availability Management Services offers you a customer-centric approach for supporting greater Teradata system productivity by mitigating the risk of downtime and extended outages. Although your Teradata Warehouse is designed and built with intrinsic features that deliver high data availability right from the start, risk events occur both inside and outside your Teradata system, which can reduce or degrade the availability experienced by end-users.

Teradata Availability Management Services provides a best-practice framework for understanding and mitigating availability risk, tools for identifying your specific availability management gaps, and a road map for prioritizing product and service purchases to match your evolving availability needs.

Availability is accomplished by managing seven attributes effectively. Availability management attributes are the tangible real-world IT assets, tools, people and processes that can be budgeted, selected, administered and supervised to support data availability. Attributes can be directly controlled to manage the impacts of risk events, which cannot always be directly controlled. Attributes span the IT assets employed and how they are configured, the environment where they are housed, and the service management to meet management and end-user needs.

Teradata Availability Risk Management Assessment identifies risk events in the following attribute categories:

* Environment — Equipment layout and physical conditions within the data center that houses the infrastructure. This includes temperature, airflow, power conditioning and data center cleanliness.
* Infrastructure — IT assets such as the production system, dual systems, BAR hardware and software, test and development systems, and disaster recovery system.
* Technology — Release model and/or version of each individual system, including hardware and software versions, utilities, tools enabled and remote connectivity.
* Support Level — Maintenance coverage hours, response times, proactive processes and tools used, and availability reporting and analysis.
* Operations — Operational procedures and support personnel used in the daily administration and exception handling of the system and database.
* Data Protection — Processes and features that minimize or eliminate data loss, performance impact due to failures, corruption and theft. This includes secure support, fallback, hot standby nodes and large cliques.
* Recoverability — Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) strategies and processes to regularly back up and archive data, and to restore data and functionality in cases of data loss or disaster.

As this diagram shows, there is more to supporting Availability than simply Teradata system quality and the level of ESS support. The other risk mitigation attributes involve customer management and personnel, third-party providers, and additional Teradata services and features.
