Product Design
Teradata recognizes that responsible product stewardship begins with its product designs and specifications. From product conception to final disposition, Teradata not only designs our products to meet or beat all applicable safety and health standards, but also strives to improve the environmental design of our products, with a goal of maximizing opportunities for environmental efficiency, recycling and/or reuse. For example, the Teradata 5500 Server, announced in August 2007, provides Teradata customers with up to a 75 percent reduction in electricity usage for the same capability data warehouse as compared to servers of three to five years prior — enough kilowatt-hours saved by one typical system to power 40 U.S. homes for one year; the Teradata 5500 Server also reduces floor space requirements by approximately 66 percent; by dramatically reducing energy usage for the same system performance and the floor space required, Teradata also has reduced associated data center cooling and power delivery infrastructure by similar ratios; the Teradata-patented cabinet door design for the Teradata 5500 server provides a 30 percent improvement in cabinet cooling efficiency over conventional cabinet door designs; cooling computer equipment can consume the same amount of energy as powering the equipment. The "green" Teradata 5500 Server is but one example of how Teradata helps its customers and society conserve environmental resources.
