Saikaya decided that its best growth strategy in an environment marked by declining retail margins was to shift emphasis away from products and toward customer relationships, thereby making it easier to identify and retain customers. In October 2001, Saikaya installed its Teradata Warehouse, and today it relies on Teradata Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Teradata analytics to enable its sales and marketing staff to analyze sales results on the spot and monitor promotions in real time. With this system, Saikaya has achieved direct mail response rates of 30% — and in some cases up to 50% — a three- to five-time improvement over responses before leveraging Teradata.
