Grupo Gigante
With annual sales in excess of $3 billion, Grupo Gigante is one of Mexico's largest supermarket chains, ranking among the top 20 corporations in Mexico and the top 50 publicly traded firms in Latin America. At last count, the company operated 475 stores in 31 Mexican states, including 230 hypermarkets under the Gigante banner, along with conventional Super G supermarkets and small-format bodegas.
Grupo Gigante's journey into data warehousing began in 2000 with a Teradata Warehouse solution. Teradata has enabled the company to determine the historical pattern of merchandise buying and sales, and now has Grupo Gigante moving ever closer to its customer-centric goal. "It has become a business-critical application for daily operations as well as for our long-range strategic direction," says Mario Alberto Mora, Chief Information Officer of Grupo Gigante. "A big part of our success in Mexico is due to Teradata."

Today, this sprawling megalopolis is home to Grupo Pão de Açúcar, Brazil's top supermarket chain and the staging area for expeditions in search of data mining's jewels.
