The concept of an enterprise data model (EDM) is more than 20 years old. Yet during whose 20 years, there have been very few success stories. Very few organizations have demonstrated a return on investment (ROI) within a reasonable amount of time. The author believes the reason behind a low success rate is that many organizations lack group agreement on the costs and benefits that are needed to calculate ROI. EDM cost and benefit must be agreed upon before the EDM work starts.
