UNUM
As a leader in life insurance, long-term care insurance, group benefits and other income protection products, Unum Corporation processed nearly 450,000 disability claims and paid out $4.2 billion in disability benefits in 2004, more than any other company of its kind.
Several mergers and acquisitions over the past decade resulted in data chaos. "There were many versions of the truth floating around," admits Margaret Johnson, Manager of Database Administration, Unum. This chaos highlighted the need for a single view of the business and accurate data analysis.
Since its implementation, the Teradata Warehouse has done just that. It also supports applications such as the Call Center Initiative, which uses voice-response units to turn customer questions into data warehouse queries, and a web portal that lets customers check claims' status online.

| Current Practices in Active Data Warehousing - An Update |
This white paper by Dr. Richard Hackathorn focuses on 3 key customers: Unum Provident, SUPERVALU and an unnamed internet company, and it assesses whether active data warehousing has become an integral part of their enterprise architecture. It also discusses how they see active data warehousing practices evolving in the coming years. The interviews with the 3 key customers probed into issues about current operations, lessons learned, and benefits realized. This paper is an update to Dr. Hackathorn's 2002 white paper which interviewed customers who were in the early stages of implementing Active Data Warehousing. This current study shows how Active Data Warehousing is becoming mainstream in large organizations.
