SUPERVALU
SUPERVALU Inc., the second-largest U.S. grocery chain, operates more than 1,500 stores in 40 states and provides distribution and related logistics support across the entire retail grocery channel.
But despite the huge data requirements inherent in such a large organization, as recently as five years ago the company had virtually none of the IT infrastructure it now enjoys. As SUPERVALU Director of Enterprise Data Warehousing Rick Collison explains, IT was considered a "necessary evil and a cost center" when he was hired in 2001.
Today SUPERVALU's Data Warehouse supports the eight businesses SUPERVALU operates and is updated throughout the day with trickle feeds and batch loads. Standardizing on a common system for managing products, pricing, promotion and placement across SUPERVALU's various companies has proven to be invaluable, and Collison is moving toward near real-time data warehousing.

| Current Practices in Active Data Warehousing - An Update |
This white paper by Dr. Richard Hackathorn focuses on 3 key customers: Unum Provident, SUPERVALU and an unnamed internet company, and it assesses whether active data warehousing has become an integral part of their enterprise architecture. It also discusses how they see active data warehousing practices evolving in the coming years. The interviews with the 3 key customers probed into issues about current operations, lessons learned, and benefits realized. This paper is an update to Dr. Hackathorn's 2002 white paper which interviewed customers who were in the early stages of implementing Active Data Warehousing. This current study shows how Active Data Warehousing is becoming mainstream in large organizations.
