NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR), announced today that Yunnan Telecom Co Ltd is deploying a Teradata® enterprise data warehouse (EDW), with the first phase of implementation now under way. The system will provide Yunnan Telecom with an integrated, stable and scalable data warehouse platform throughout Yunnan province, enabling the company to derive business value from its historical data and to respond to market needs in real time.
With the Teradata EDW, Yunnan Telecom will speed up its transition from a traditional network infrastructure company to a modern information services provider. The system will also help the company to meet its regulatory obligations, manage customer relationships and enhance reporting to its holding company, China Telecom.
Yunnan Telecom is the largest fixed-line operator and comprehensive information provider in Yunnan province in Southwest China, which also owns the provincial largest fixed-line telephone and personal handyphone system (PHS) networks. In recent years, Yunnan Telecom has undergone rapid growth, leading to the build-up of large volumes of data in geographically dispersed systems. Teradata will help Yunnan Telecom to collect, extract, load and clean the data and integrate it into a single EDW. Yunnan Telecom's management and technical staff will be able to search the data warehouse in real time to detect business trends. The company will also deploy a data-quality audit module to identify and correct errors, thus achieving a continual improvement in data quality.

The Yunnan Telecom EDW is designed to comply with China Telecom's Enterprise Data Model, thereby meeting corporate standards for operational analysis. The system will also meet Yunnan Telecom's own application requirements. Users from across the company will have easy access to the powerful system, including the senior management, who will use key performance indicators generated from the system to monitor and manage the company's business. The marketing team will be able to analyze customer preferences to support marketing campaigns, and the data analysis team expects to process data integration easily from all sources and support other teams' decision-making.
Through a variety of front-end tools, the system will provide the different views required by individual applications and will produce tables and reports automatically. After implementing the system, Yunnan Telecom will benefit from the optimized data resource, lower operation costs and flexible marketing strategies, enabling the company to retain high-value customers, increase business from existing customers and effectively acquire new customers.
