"SELLING
BACKUP, ARCHIVE RESTORE (BAR) technology is like selling
insurance," says John Barrett, StorageTek's Teradata global account
manager. That is, no one really thinks they're going to need it
until millions of dollars' worth of information is at stake.
But like insurance, you should
never be without it. That's why the StorageTek and Teradata sales
and support teams, along with BakBone Software, have joined forces
to create one of the most powerful, effective BAR solutions available
today. StorageTek designs and manufactures automation hardware
for information storage and retrieval. They offer a wide range
of enterprise tape drives and modified library combination components
that meet Teradata's BAR requirements. StorageTek develops products
based on Teradata's specifications, while Teradata engineers perform
the certification and performance testing. This results in a totally
integrated and Teradata-supported solution, which has enabled
many companies to develop comprehensive BAR solutions with minimal
system downtime. For example, a European Teradata customer reports
that a full backup of its 1TB database now takes place in less
than one hour, compared to 80-plus hours on the mainframe, along
with many other process efficiencies. "We have had no impact on
our users as a result of the times which we have scheduled the
(BAR) jobs, and no impact on our mainframe," the customer notes.
"Rather, it has freed the mainframe resources."
Barrett describes the partnership,
which includes Teradata Operational Services provided during the
installation, this way: "Nobody else can do what Teradata does
in terms of software, hardware and operational services." When
a single hour of downtime can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars
in terms of lost revenue and compromised services, nothing less
than a total solution will do.
StorageTek believes strongly in
matching the level of data protection to the information's value.
A wide range of protection capabilities are available, each designed
to fill specific roles in the protection scheme. Barrett believes
that because needs can change, especially as the volume of data
continues to grow, it's critical to reevaluate the business's
BAR needs on a regular basis to maintain or reduce critical backup
and restore timeframes.
StorageTek's unique relationship
with BakBone Software, a leading developer of BAR software products,
provides an end-to-end solution, allowing Teradata to take the
lead in terms of total support and proper integration. The collaboration
of all three companies has raised BAR. T
