UK Retailer JD Williams Chooses Teradata for Integrated Web Intelligence - 4/28/2009
System’s initial results prove positive, offer deep visibility to detailed data
ISTANBUL, Turkey — Teradata Corporation (NYSE: TDC), the world’s largest company solely focused on data warehousing and enterprise analytics, announced today that JD Williams & Company Limited, the UK's leading direct home shopping company, has selected Teradata and its alliance partner Speed-Trap, a producer of customer insight software, to provide an Integrated Web Intelligence system that leverages fresh online interaction data to deliver instantly actionable customer insights.
The system will feature Speed-Trap’s innovative software that uses Web 2.0 technology to capture complete, real-time data on individual online visitors and customers based on detailed analysis of their current and historic interaction behavior. Continuous, massive streams of fresh web data will be routed into the Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse, where it will be integrated with existing customer profiles, and the combined intelligence will be used in near-real time for relevant, timely customer communications.
JD Williams tested the software extensively during a four-week evaluation period and were impressed with the detailed visibility to customer interaction, specifically the granularity of the data provided.
"This is an exciting new approach to data warehouse-driven business agility, enhancing our pool of customer intelligence with detailed click stream data – a solution which has proven its value in a recent proof-of-concept," said Neil McGowan, chief information officer, JD Williams. "This innovative system comes at a perfect moment for us. Orders from the Internet are starting to exceed telephone orders for the first time in the company’s history."
JD Williams has a pre-existing Teradata data warehouse system and is a user of the powerful Teradata Customer Relationship Management (CRM) application portfolio. The implementation of the new production system includes a data warehouse platform upgrade and Teradata professional services as well as extended use of Teradata CRM. The new system will enable cross-channel customer dialogue, making the addition of detailed web browsing data from Speed-Trap a critical input for holistic CRM.
"Web analytics data is one of the few pieces of customer data that direct marketers have not yet integrated into their customer databases," according to an October 2008 report by Forrester Research analysts Megan Burns and Suresh Vittal, "Q&A: Five Web Analytics Answers Direct Marketers Must Know." "This is a missed opportunity for most direct marketers: Web analytics data helps marketers deepen their understanding of customers and campaigns as well as identify relevant content for future campaigns."
A company’s data assets from multiple communication channels are becoming much more valuable as global economic pressures drive organizations to explore every possible clue to customer preferences and intentions – and the timeliness of action on that intelligence is a determinant of competitive advantage.
"The routing of web data into the Teradata database for integration with other customer information will result in a significant marketing advantage for companies competing amid intense economic pressures," said Chris Armitage, area vice president, Teradata United Kingdom. "JD Williams is using its extreme customer focus as a change catalyst – by introducing true multi-channel conversations into its CRM program, covering millions of customers."
Using the latest Teradata tools and utilities and specialty partnerships like Speed-Trap, Teradata Integrated Web Intelligence provides a complete solution that collects and integrates web behavior into the customer’s data warehouse to provide access to a more comprehensive customer view. The solution includes all the necessary hardware, software and services to integrate increasingly valuable web behavior data into a Teradata Warehouse. Teradata mixed workload performance allows simultaneous loading of near real time web behavior data while delivering hundreds or thousands of customized messages to virtually any channel.
