DUSSELDORF, Germany and LAS VEGAS — Teradata Corporation (NYSE: TDC), the world's largest company solely focused on data warehousing and enterprise analytics, announced today that Otto Group, the world's largest mail-order business, is expanding and enhancing its Teradata platform to an active data warehouse to support operational processes with time-critical information. The company uses its Teradata system primarily for customer relationship management (CRM), but also for procurement and logistics, financial reporting such as income statements and Internet statistical analytics. The current expansion of the system includes new hardware and software, an enhanced service level and data management utilities.

Teradata has collaborated with the mail-order leader to adapt the system to the specific requirements of Otto — closely collaborating with both business and technology specialists.

Otto opted for Teradata after reviewing solutions offered by other providers. The Teradata platform proved to be the ideal system for providing operative processes with historical data from the data warehouse in very short time intervals as required for the management of business processes. The expansion will be implemented in accordance with the data warehouse architecture developed by Otto, in collaboration with Teradata.

The retail and services group has been building out a company-wide database within its Teradata environment since 1989, with the aim of creating a standardized view of its business. Based on this approach, Otto can avoid data redundancies and evaluate its corporate data independent of specific applications. Otto integrated its data in full detail. During this process, the volume of data grew considerably, making it necessary to further expand the platform this year.

"Centralized data storage in an active enterprise data warehouse paves the way for implementing our SOA concept and controlling business process in an active and result-oriented manner," said Dr. Wolfgang Linder, member of the executive board, IT and Logistics, Otto Group. "The demands that we place on our data warehouse have grown significantly over the past few years. At the same time, the highly scalable technology of Teradata has displayed high performance and availability under extremely demanding conditions. Teradata handles continuously mounting volumes of data and supports mixed workloads, even when large numbers of users simultaneously access the system."

"Otto is the worldwide leader when it comes to perfectly fulfilling customers' wishes and turning this into a business advantage with a high performance informational infrastructure," said Hermann Wimmer, president, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Teradata. Teradata has expanded its portfolio with a wide range of capabilities for Otto. This includes the administration of strategic and operative analysis software in a single system, enhanced workload and database management and improved data replication. In addition, new features have increased platform availability and database performance.
