"Now, we can look directly into the vending machine as it is set up or stocked and see how space is being utilized, and we can show how to change columns to eliminate out-of-stocks and increase sales of other products. We can even show what will happen when you replace a product or swap out products. No matter what data we collect, the program can analyze the results, which will help tell us what works best in a given situation."

Haruhiku Inagaki, President and CEO, Hokuriku Coca-Cola Bottling Company

Coca-Cola

Before switching to its enterprise data warehouse (EDW) from Teradata, Coca-Cola had nearly all of its vital business data trapped at its Atlanta headquarters. End-users and decision makers had to search for information in the data silos of multiple systems, making timely decision-making more than a challenge and often taking nearly a month to capture needed information.

Once Coca-Cola's new EDW was implemented, information became available enterprise-wide through a customized web-based front end. Decision makers across the world are able to obtain data at any time for their respective local market areas and evaluate it on a global, regional and local basis.

In Japan, Hokuriku Coca-Cola Bottling Company (HCCBC) is also using Teradata technology. In late 2002, the company placed all of its vending machines located in Nagano, Japan, on a wireless network and established a program to gather near real-time POS data from each machine. Responding more quickly to sales trends netted HCCBC some great results:

  • 10% increase in revenues
  • 46% decrease in overtime and associated costs
  • 42% increase in number of machines that could be served per salesperson
  • Increased product freshness
  • Better customer service
