Teradata and BKK: Insuring Growth Through Analytics

In selecting a technology partner for its data warehouse, BKK conducted a series of benchmark tests that included large-volume data loads, standard query response and a special set of ad-hoc queries that were run with no system pre-tuning. Teradata outperformed all competitors in every comparison and was selected based on its proven performance superiority, scalability and significantly lower administrative costs.

"We decided to implement a system that would not only give us the ability to capture and store the massive amounts of data we gathered daily, but also provide us with analytical insights that would help us improve member service and increase market share."

Harmut Scholz, CIO, BKK, 2008

Bundesverband der Betriebskrankenkassen (BKK) is a collection of companies that make up one of the leading providers of statutory health insurance in Germany. Of Germany's more than 250 providers of statutory health insurance, 188 belong to BKK. These independent non-profit corporations insure more than 14 million people.

BKK created an enterprise data warehouse (EDW) called BKK InfoNet based on Teradata technology. With this system, each of the member insurance companies can review and analyze their data at various levels of detail, while security measures protect the privacy of individuals and the competitive information of other organizations. In addition, each insurance company can benchmark its business against the anonymous-but-detailed information of the remaining companies.

The resulting Active Enterprise Intelligence from Teradata provides insight that has helped BKK and its insurance companies increase customer membership by 45%, decrease costs and enhance service efficiency.
