Teradata and the State of Missouri: New Visibility for a Taxing Problem

In 2004, the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR) partnered with Teradata to deploy enterprise data warehouse (EDW) technology that matches data from several outside sources to the department's internal data. In the first three years of the program, the DOR recovered nearly $21 million of unpaid and underreported taxes from non-compliant filers.

"The Teradata warehouse not only paid for itself, but it has provided us with a new budget line item of revenue that will come into the state coffers. It's been an exceptional value."

Jim Brentlinger, Administrator of the Taxation Bureau, Missouri Department of Revenue, 2008

Prior to implementing an enterprise data warehouse from Teradata, the State of Missouri Department of Revenue had over 118 tax systems that were not communicating with each other. As a result, the DOR had to run a lot of very large manual paper reports and was still unable to even find that a particular taxpayer maybe did not report something or underreported something.

Within the first three years after implementing a Teradata solution, the DOR recovered more than $21 million from noncompliant tax filers — with the first $2.2 million coming in the first 14 days.

The current environment at the DOR uses Teradata Professional Services including Teradata Warehouse Miner, which is used for ranking and scoring customer leads.

The DOR can now access and compile data from a variety of sources, including state departments and the Internal Revenue Service. As a result, the DOR can create a complete view of each taxpayer. The department also can use the system to run discovery programs against the data, looking for non-compliant taxpayers and other problems.
