Nishi-Nippon Railroad Ltd. (Nishitetsu), based in Fukuoka, is one of Japan's major railroad companies, established 100 years ago. Serving the people in northern Kyushu, Japan, Nishitetsu is in a wide array of businesses, including the railroad, bus route, real estate, air cargo, and recreation service industries.
Nishitetsu implemented a multi-terabyte information management system from Teradata and Teradata Database software to support the launch of its innovative smart card system called Nimoca. This intelligent system is considered the first of its kind in such a large scale in the nation. Supporting both travel and retail customers, the data-centric environment provides detailed data visibility and enhanced business insight for both increased customer satisfaction and business growth.
More than 100,000 cards are in circulation and being used by 650 member stores and 1,250 electronic-money terminals. Data volumes are expected to reach 1 million data items per day.
