General Questions

1. What is Teradata IntelliCloud™?

Teradata IntelliCloud is the newest generation of our secure managed cloud offering. We provide data and analytic software as a service (SaaS). You can subscribe to Teradata Database, Aster Analytics, and/or Hadoop and receive complete setup and management of software and infrastructure – so that you can focus on business outcomes.

IntelliCloud services are available with new deployment choices: Teradata IntelliFlex – our flagship enterprise data warehouse platform that we deploy and manage in our data centers – and public cloud infrastructure from Amazon Web Services (AWS) that we provision and manage.

6. What is the performance and storage capacity of IntelliCloud™?

Performance and customer data space (CDS) vary according to the selected IntelliCloud service and node/instance type:

Teradata Database:

  • IntelliFlex in Teradata data center: 65TB of CDS with SSD on 4+1i configuration with dual 18-core CPUs and 512GB RAM per R630 node. Includes full redundant storage arrays and fallback with 40Gbps InfiniBand node interconnection. Can unfold to 4+1+2 for additional CPU power.
  • Appliance in Teradata data center: 7.5TB of CDS with HDD with dual 14-core CPUs and 256GB RAM per R730XD node. Includes 40Gbps InfiniBand node interconnection. Can expand in 1-node increments for additional CPU power and storage capacity.
  • AWS public cloud infrastructure: m4.10xlarge with 5TB or 20TB volumes per instance. Block level compression is enabled. Can expand in 1-instance increments up to 64 instances for additional CPU and storage capacity.
  • In all cases Fallback is enabled and cannot be turned off.

Aster Analytics:

  • Dedicated infrastructure in Teradata data center: 5.5TB of CDS per node

Hadoop

  • Appliance in Teradata data center: 8TB of CDS per node with 3 Master Nodes, 2 Edge Nodes, 3 Data Nodes with dual 14-core CPUs and 256GB RAM per R730XD node.

Compression is enabled by default for all user tables on IntelliCloud systems. Actual compression rates will vary depending on data demographics—however rates of 3X or higher compression are common.

7. What is the minimum number of nodes in a single IntelliCloud™ system?

The minimum number of nodes that can be specified in a single system varies according to service and node/instance type:

  • Teradata Database: Minimum 2 nodes (managed appliance) or 4+1 nodes (managed IntelliFlex)
  • Aster Analytics: Minimum of 4 nodes are required (2 Queens and 2 Workers)
  • Hadoop: Minimum of 3 Master Nodes, 2 Edge Nodes, and 3 Data Nodes

8. Which deployment choice for IntelliCloud™ (Teradata Database) should I select?

Teradata IntelliFlex offers:

  • Dedicated, purpose-built hardware provisioned and managed by Teradata
  • Comparable to on-premises IntelliFlex but in Teradata data center
  • High availability with hot standby node capability
  • Connectivity via site-to-site VPN or dedicated connection
  • Best option for enterprise workloads requiring highest performance

Teradata Appliance offers:

  • Dedicated, purpose-built hardware provisioned and managed by Teradata
  • Comparable to on-premises appliance but in Teradata data center
  • Balanced performance with storage in nodes
  • Connectivity via site-to-site VPN or dedicated connection
  • Best option for appliance-class workloads

AWS public cloud infrastructure offers:

  • m4.10xlarge AWS Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) infrastructure
  • EC2 and Elastic Block Store (EBS) resources provisioned and managed by Teradata
  • Connectivity via internet access or dedicated connection
  • Best option for appliance-class workloads within the AWS environment

9. What other systems are provided during provisioning of IntelliCloud services?

IntelliCloud customers get three (3) servers along with the Teradata- or Aster-provisioned platforms:

  • A load server running Teradata or Aster load utilities with 100GB of staging space
  • Preconfigured Viewpoint server for management of database resources including predefined views:
    • Dashboard with a high-level view of IntelliCloud systems
    • Current activity for monitoring active sessions
    • Capacity view for managing space and resource utilization trends over time
  • Utility server (via remote desktop access) which is preconfigured with Teradata and/or Aster client tools for data access, database management, and load/unload functions.

10. If I want both Teradata Database and Aster environments with IntelliCloud, will I receive two sets of load servers, Viewpoint servers, and utility servers?

Customers have the option of requesting one set of servers to manage multiple environments.

11. What database releases are supported at this time?

IntelliCloud service currently supports:

  • Teradata Database 15.10
  • Aster Analytics 6.20
  • Cloudera CDH 5.9
  • Hortonworks HDP 2.5.3

12. Does IntelliCloud (Teradata Database) come with Columnar?

Yes, Teradata Columnar is included with IntelliCloud (Teradata Database). Teradata Columnar is a hybrid row and column database that fully integrates columnar and row-based tables, establishing new levels of flexibility, performance, and compression and strengthening your data warehouse and analytics capabilities.

Benefits include:

  • Improves data warehouse performance by only reading the data absolutely required for each query
  • Allows you to respond to more queries faster while storing more data
  • Integrated solution can mix and match the storage formats in hybrid row and column storage, thereby delivering the highest performance
  • Simple to use; minimal DBA effort required, and no changes necessary to existing applications or queries
  • Distinct architectural approach creates containers within each column so data can be compressed more efficiently, thus enabling storage of larger amounts of data in the same footprint
  • Dynamically adjusts compression mechanisms for optimal storage as data evolves over time

13. Does Teradata Database come with QueryGrid?

IntelliCloud (Teradata Database) can be enhanced with Teradata QueryGrid, an optional feature that lets your business work with a seamless data fabric across all of your data and analytical engines for no-hassle analytics. Users get the most value out of all your data – including Teradata Database, Teradata Aster Database, open-source Hadoop, Oracle Database, and powerful languages such as SAS, Perl, Python, Ruby, and R – by taking advantage of specialized processing engines operating as a cohesive analytic environment.

QueryGrid takes a unique approach to multi-system analytics by giving users a seamless, self-service experience in accessing all their data and analytics across systems through SQL. Users can continue using their existing SQL skills and tools, which enables a whole new class of analytics without retraining.

Teradata Database’s Adaptive Optimizer ensures high performance query plans using data from other sources while special features when using systems within the Teradata Unified Data Architecture such as passing workload priorities makes the best use of available resources.

QueryGrid lets you automate and optimize use of your analytic systems through “push-down” processing across platforms. Benefits include:

  • Minimizes data movement and processes data where it resides
  • Minimizes data duplication
  • Transparently automates analytic processing and data movement between systems
  • Enables easy bi-directional data movement

Data Connectivity and Loading

14. What are connectivity options for my cloud system(s)?

Customers can choose from several methods for connecting to IntelliCloud.  A site-to-site VPN from your data center to ours is standard when using IntelliFlex or an appliance, while an internet connection is standard when using AWS infrastructure. The site-to-site VPN uses a 100 Mbps IPsec connection to keep data transmissions secure and provides bandwidth up to 100 Mbps.

If greater bandwidth or a dedicated network port is required, Teradata offers 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps direct connections for an additional fee. With this option, you procure the WAN bandwidth via your preferred telecommunications provider.

15. Is 100 Mbps over VPN enough for my data movement needs?

Whether your workload will need more bandwidth than 100 Mbps depends on how much data you plan on moving back and forth between your data center and IntelliCloud. Follow this link for a simple calculator to help you better understand your data transfer bandwidth needs.

Please also note that while site-to-site VPN connections over the Internet are secure, actual bandwidth will vary. If you need guaranteed bandwidth you will need to use a dedicated private circuit as described above.

16. What is needed to set up a site-to-site VPN?

A Teradata IntelliCloud site-to-site VPN form must be submitted before a VPN tunnel can be established. This form will be given to you by our Cloud Operations team upon order placement. A global public IP is required for routing return traffic on the site-to-site VPN.

17. What’s the best way to access my IntelliCloud environment?

Upon provisioning a Teradata IntelliCloud system, instructions will be provided on how to access your environment. As a customer, you will get a list of IP addresses to your database systems, load server, Viewpoint server, and utilities server along with instructions on how to access each one. The load, Viewpoint, and utility servers will be preconfigured to access your database system(s) from within IntelliCloud.

External IP addresses will be provided to access database systems directly from servers or desktops within your own network, and you can download Teradata Tools & Utilities

Database access to Teradata is available through any of the following drivers and utilities:

    • ODBC, JDBC, OLE DB Drivers
    • .Net Data Provider
    • Teradata CLIv2
    • Teradata Plug-in for Eclipse
    • BTEQ – command line query tool
    • Teradata Studio – Eclipse-based database query tool

Database access to Aster is available through the following drivers and utilities:

    • JDBC, ODBC, .Net Provider

Note that there is no SSH access to either the Queen or the Workers. Access to the Queen is through the database and administrative interfaces, not through the OS. Teradata Studio also provides SQL access into the Aster Analytics as a Service Cluster. In the Windows Utility server provided for each customer, Teradata Studio also provides SQL access into the Aster Analytics as a Service Cluster.

18. Will I be provided a load server for loading my data?

Yes, a load server with 100 GB of staging space will be provisioned with your IntelliCloud environment.  This server can be used for loading when data volumes are smaller than 100GB per batch.

19. I need to load large and concurrent data volumes. What’s the difference between the load server included in the base price and an enhanced load server?

Included in IntelliCloud is a load server with 100 GB of staging space. If you expect to have large load volumes on a regular basis, Cloud Operations can optionally provision an “Enhanced Load Server” which is configured with 1 TB of storage space. Teradata tools and utilities version 15.10 are included with both load servers.

20. Will I be able to load custom scripts on the Load Server?

Yes.

21. How do I load data into IntelliCloud?

Teradata IntelliCloud load servers support SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) to move data files into the cloud. All necessary load/unload utilities are provided on the load server. Data loads are accomplished in the following ways:

Teradata Database:

    • Teradata Parallel Transporter – (recommended)
      • Load Operator to insert data into empty tables (fastest)
      • Update Operator to insert/update data into populated tables
      • Stream Operator to insert data into tables concurrently (enhanced option)
      • Inserter Operator to insert BLOB data
    • Legacy stand-alone tools – (for support of legacy scripts)
      • FastLoad
      • FastExport
      • MultiLoad
      • TPump (enhanced option)

Aster Analytics:

    • Aster Loader Tool
    • Aster Export Tool

22. What is the best way to load large files to IntelliCloud? 

Portable storage devices can be used to transfer large amounts of data into Teradata IntelliCloud. Please review the Cloud Import/Export document available on our cloud service desk for further details. Teradata Parallel Transporter can load data files in delimited or fixed width formats.

Customers with an existing Teradata system can use ARC (ARCMAIN utility) to create a copy of data to load into the external device by using an ARCHIVE command for each source database. The external device is then encrypted and sent to the Teradata Data Center where it is mounted. The customer can then load the data from the drive to the Teradata environment. Requests for receiving and mounting the drive can be made through the Cloud Support Portal.

Another option is “Teradata Direct Connect” for initiating a connection from your data center to Teradata IntelliCloud. Optional 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps connection ports are available for data transfer.

 

Data Security

23. Data security is extremely important. How does IntelliCloud tackle security?

Security is the number one priority for Teradata IntelliCloud services, and that’s why we deliver across-the-board support for every facet of cloud security including physical security, network security, data protection, monitoring, and access controls.

We designed our managed cloud services from the ground up to meet the most advanced data security requirements, giving current and prospective customers the peace of mind that their data is private and secure with Teradata.

Teradata IntelliCloud supports secure connections for data transmission. Your cloud systems are only accessible via IPsec VPN tunnels between your premise/data center and IntelliCloud, providing an additional layer of security. All traffic is encrypted.

To keep “data at rest” secure, Teradata utilizes self-encrypting drives on dedicated infrastructure.

24. Has Teradata undergone any compliance audits to verify security?

Yes. Teradata has invested in rigorous third party audits of its managed cloud offerings in order to demonstrate compliance with industry security regulations and industry best practices such as ISO 27001 and SOC 2 and most recently SOC 1, PCI and HIPAA.

25. What authentication methods are available?

Teradata IntelliCloud systems are LDAP ready. By default, systems will use a native database authentication method.

In Teradata Database, users DBC (superuser), SYSDBA (database management), and SECADM (security administration) are provided with TD2 authentication and default passwords.  It is important to change passwords for these users as soon as you can access the system. User SYSBACK is created on all Teradata systems and its password is secured by Cloud Operations. The SYSBACK user’s password should not be changed because it is used to execute daily backup operations on the system.

In the Aster Database, users DB_SUPERUSER and BEEHIVE are provided with native authentication and default passwords which should be changed as soon as you can access the system.

26. Does Teradata Cloud Operations have access to my data?

No. The Cloud Operations team does not have visibility or access to customers’ data.

27. Will my data ever be transferred to or backed up in another country?

No. Customer data is never transferred across country borders.

 

Availability

28. Do IntelliCloud services come with an availability service level guarantee?

Teradata will use commercially reasonable efforts to make the Teradata IntelliCloud service generally available 7 x 24 x 365. Teradata will target a Service Level Agreement (SLA) for IntelliCloud Platform Availability (excluding planned downtime) of 99.9% measured on a monthly basis.

29. What availability techniques are utilized for IntelliCloud (Teradata Database)?

All nodes for IntelliCloud (Teradata Database) are configured using RAID 1 protection, which provides redundancy at the hardware/disk-drive level. If a single drive fails, Teradata Database will continue to function without interruption. The failed drive will be replaced by Cloud Operations as soon as possible and the drive will rebuild automatically.

In the unlikely event that both copies of a RAID 1 pair fail, the Teradata Database has been configured to use Fallback protection on all tables. Fallback provides a layer of protection that extends beyond just a loss of redundant hardware. With Fallback, a secondary copy of your data exists on a different node (for Teradata systems with two or more nodes). The database will go through a restart and continue to function with a reduction in performance. Once the failed drives are replaced, the Teradata Database will rebuild the new drives using the Fallback data copies.

30. What availability techniques are utilized for IntelliCloud (Aster Analytics)?

All nodes for IntelliCloud (Aster Analytics) are configured using RAID 1 protection, which provides redundancy at the hardware/disk-drive level. In the unlikely event that two drives within a RAID 1 set fail, the Aster Database has been configured to use a Replication Factor of two. This means that a secondary copy of your data exists on a different node. In this instance, the database will continue to function with a reduction in performance. Once the failed drives are replaced, the Aster Database will rebuild the new drives using replicated copies of your data.

 

Scalability

31. I need more nodes. How do I scale my IntelliCloud system?

Please work directly with your Teradata Solution Architect to place an order to increase the size of your system.  Depending on your deployment environment, provisioning of additional nodes could take a few minutes (on AWS infrastructure) or up to 24-48 hours (on hosted platforms).

  • IntelliFlex systems can scale up by unfolding from a 4+1 configuration to a 4+1+2 configuration.
  • Other Teradata managed infrastructure can be scaled up one node at a time.
  • Aster Analytics systems can be scaled up one node at a time but cannot be scaled down.

32. Will I have access to my Teradata system during scaling?

During scaling operations, Teradata Database systems are available for read-only operations; customers cannot load or change data but can continue to run queries and reports. When the new resources are ready, there will be a few minutes of scheduled downtime to transition from the former to new resources.

Aster Analytics as a Service systems are not available when growing the system while data are balanced across nodes.

 

Backups

33. How often are my data backed up in IntelliCloud?

You may choose to have data within your IntelliCloud (Teradata Database) account backed up daily, weekly, or monthly. Each backup will be replicated to a secondary site. Future releases of IntelliCloud will include a backup solution for Aster Analytics and Hadoop systems.

34. Can my backups be encrypted?

Teradata provides customers the option to purchase encrypted backups within the Teradata IntelliCloud service. This level of encryption was designed to protect sensitive backup data against unauthorized access and will utilize industry-standard encryption algorithms and the RSA BSAFE FIPS 140-2 validated cryptographic libraries as well as supporting both standard CBC and the stronger Cipher mode GC for additional security. Please note that the encrypted backup feature has some impact on the normal backup and restoration timeframes.

When a customer chooses this enhanced service, the backup copy at the primary data center and the replicated backup at the secondary data center will both be encrypted.

35. Are backups automatically configured?

As part of provisioning, two backup copies are maintained at the primary site and an off-site replication copy is maintained at a secondary site. The “sysback” user in Teradata Database is used to perform backups. If you want to change passwords for the “sysback” account, you must coordinate with Cloud Operations via a change management ticket in the Teradata Cloud Service Portal to ensure uninterrupted backups.

36. Does IntelliCloud retain backups?

By default, IntelliCloud (Teradata Database) maintains two generations of backup copies on disk at primary site and one replicated copy at a secondary site.

37. What if I need my data restored? How is this process accomplished?

Customers will place a request for restore (either at table, database, or full system level) via the Teradata Cloud Service Portal. 

38. Does Teradata Cloud Operations have access to my backups?

No. The Cloud Operations team does not have visibility or access to customers’ data.

39. Will my data ever be transferred to or backed up in another country?

No. Customer data is never transferred across country borders.

 

Passive Systems

40. Are there any Passive System options available with IntelliCloud?

Yes, IntelliCloud customers served from Teradata data centers in the United States have the option to subscribe to an IntelliCloud Passive System to be used as a secondary / failover site in the event of a primary site outage. Depending on customer preference, either an on-premises Teradata system or an IntelliCloud environment may be considered the primary site. 

IntelliCloud Passive Systems have reduced pricing as compared to active environments. Passive System pricing is for systems used exclusively for disaster recovery purposes. Passive Systems are “standby” systems – i.e., the system does not have active users and is accessed only if there is a production system outage.

To be clear, the IntelliCloud Passive System option is not a turnkey disaster recovery service and customers retain responsibility for transferring or reconfiguring user profile information after a disaster is declared. The Teradata Cloud Operations team will assist the customer in whatever ways are feasible while maintain strict adherence to data security and privacy policies, but ultimate responsibility remains with the customer.

41. How does a Passive System work for on-premises primary Teradata systems?

For situations when the customer designates a qualifying on-premises Teradata system as the primary site, there are multiple options for loading data to the IntelliCloud Passive System environment. Standard Teradata load utilities are available as part of the purchase of the Passive System or, alternatively, customers may purchase Teradata Data Mover to move data from their on-premises system to the IntelliCloud Passive System.

The Recovery Time Objective / Recovery Point Objective (RTO/RPO) for the Passive System for an on-premises environment is dependent upon the data loading / synchronization schedule as determined by the customer. The IntelliCloud Passive System will be generally available 24 x 7 x 365.

42. How does a Passive System work for IntelliCloud primary systems?

For situations when the customer designates an IntelliCloud environment as the primary site, backups will be restored to the secondary IntelliCloud Passive System appliance – located at a remote data center – at the point of disaster declaration.

The Recovery Time Objective (RTO) for the IntelliCloud Passive System at the secondary site will align to the completion of the backup restore process. The Recovery Point Objective (RPO) for the IntelliCloud Passive System will align to the point when the last full backup of the primary system was completed. The IntelliCloud Passive System environment will be generally available 24 x 7 x 365.

Note that backups will not be performed for the secondary Passive System instance except when a disaster has been declared and the secondary instance becomes the customer’s primary IntelliCloud service. During a disaster, backup replication back to the primary data center will be suspended.

 

Maintenance

43. Who performs hardware/software maintenance on my Teradata systems?

Complete hardware and software support is provided by the Cloud Operations team. Cloud Operations will inform you when updates to Teradata software or operating systems are recommended. Cloud Operations will coordinate incidents and change control with you (for implementation of software updates) as required. Note: testing of software updates is the customer’s responsibility.

44. During software maintenance, will my Teradata system be available?

The Teradata system(s) will not be available when software maintenance is performed on systems during a planned maintenance window. 

 

Monitoring

45. How do I monitor the performance of my IntelliCloud system?

A Viewpoint server is provisioned as part of a Teradata IntelliCloud environment. Teradata Viewpoint is your primary operational view for monitoring and managing your cloud systems.  This instance of Viewpoint can only monitor your Cloud-based systems.

46. What does Teradata Cloud Operations monitor for me?

Cloud Operations monitors platform availability, backups, security, and availability of the Teradata IntelliCloud environment.  

 

Support

47. Who are Teradata Cloud Operations and what do they do?

The Cloud Operations team performs activities such as:

  • Onboarding assistance
  • Provisioning assistance
  • System monitoring
  • System maintenance
  • Patch management
  • Software upgrades

Our Cloud Operations team continually monitors and administers the IntelliCloud environment to help ensure availability and data recovery and provides daily backups to a remote location.

48. Does Cloud Operations have visibility into my data?

No. The Cloud Operations team does not have visibility or access to the customer’s database.

49. Does the Cloud Operations team provide DBA services?

50. What are the support hours for IntelliCloud?

Teradata provides Cloud Service Desk services 7 x 24 x 365 at 1-877-MY-TDATA (1-877-698-3282).

The Teradata Cloud Service Portal is also available 7 x 24 x 365 for the submission of incidents, changes, and requests for information.

51. What can I expect for IntelliCloud service availability?

Teradata will use commercially reasonable efforts to make the Teradata IntelliCloud service generally available 7 x 24 x 365. Teradata will target a Service Level Agreement (SLA) for IntelliCloud Platform Availability (excluding planned downtime) of 99.9% measured on a monthly basis.

* Business Day: Monday-Friday 9:00 AM EST-8:00 PM EST.  
* Next Business Day: Example: If a P2 or P3 incident is opened in the Teradata Cloud Service Portal after 8:00 PM EST on Friday, Teradata Staff will respond to this incident on Monday at 9:00 AM EST. 

52. How do I request support on my IntelliCloud systems?

Up to five (5) customer users will be provided with access to the Teradata Cloud Support Portal for submitting requests for information and tracking incidents and changes.

Teradata IntelliCloud is priced to be simple: everything is flat rate and all-inclusive. Database software, hardware, storage, daily operations, and backup are all rolled into one simple price.

Pricing is also flexible: IntelliCloud services can be consumed on a monthly basis, annually, or over a 3-year term.

Pricing is transparent: there are no hidden fees for bandwidth, data transfer, storage, or support.
