Teradata Named a Leader in 2014 Gartner Data Warehouse Database Management Systems Magic Quadrant
Report states “Big data is becoming normal, and leaders have also addressed the big data challenge”
Teradata Corp. (NYSE: TDC), the analytic data platforms, marketing applications and services company, announced today that Teradata is positioned as a leader for the fifteenth consecutive year in the new 2014 Gartner, Inc. Magic Quadrant for Data Warehouse Database Management Systems,* March 7, 2014, by analysts Mark A. Beyer and Roxane Edjlali.
“Entering 2014, the hype around replacing the data warehouse gives way to the more sensible strategy of augmenting it,” the report opens. The evaluation notes the rise of new big data entrants to the space, and states: “The influence of the logical data warehouse has created a situation in which multiple repository strategies are now expected, even from a single vendor.” Vendors are rated on both vision and execution.
“Gartner’s data warehousing report follows three 2014 analyst evaluations in which Teradata is rated a leader. The first recognition noted our leadership in database analytics, the second gave us top recognition for the Teradata® Unified Data Architecture™, and the third report acknowledged that Teradata is a leader in big data Hadoop solutions,” said Bob Fair, executive vice president, Teradata. “With the explosion of big data, customers are asking for help to design, architect, implement and optimize their analytic environments from a functional and cost perspective. Teradata’s deep consulting expertise and experience qualify us to be the trusted advisor to help customers navigate this complexity.”
Analysts Beyer and Edjlali point out that “Big data is becoming normal, and leaders have also addressed the big data challenge — usually focusing on social and machine data — but do not limit themselves to specific sources of data.” Notably, Gartner has updated its definition of a data warehouse: “A data warehouse is a solution architecture that may consist of many different technologies in combination. At the core, however, any vendor offering or combination of offerings must exhibit the capability of providing access to the files or tables under management by open access tools. A data warehouse is simply a warehouse of data, not a specific class or type of technology.” The report introduces non-relational data management systems to its evaluation for the first time.
“It’s exciting that Teradata has won the IT equivalent of the grand slam of four important analyst evaluations. Across the entire spectrum of big data technologies Teradata solutions are leaders,” said Scott Gnau, president of Teradata Labs. “Our mission is to develop best-of-breed solutions that go beyond hype and deliver value for our customers. Our R&D teams are 100 percent focused on this mission, and it is great to see our innovation and execution again being recognized.”
The report comes at a time when forward-thinking organizations are launching big data strategies and programs as they face new challenges in data complexity. This has resulted in a demand spike for strategic consultation around big data architecture. Teradata Consulting Services include strategic consulting as well as complete training, and Teradata’s end-to-end big data services guide customers through the entire process in the pursuit of a differentiating competitive edge. Along with consulting expertise, Teradata Customer Support includes multiple service offerings to meet a range of customer needs.
